How do I apply for an employer payroll tax account number?

You can apply for an employer payroll tax account number using the following steps:
  • Go to the e-Services for Business page.
  • Select “e-Services Login.”
  • Select “Enroll for a username and password” to begin the enrollment process. Once you receive your verification e-mail address, select the link within the e-mail to complete the enrollment process. The link will direct you to an Enrollment verification page. If you do not verify your e-mail address within 24 hours, then you must wait at least 48 hours from the time your verification e-mail address was originally sent before restarting the enrollment process.
  • From the Enrollment Verification page, select the e-Services for Business link.  On the e-Services for Business page, select “e-Services Login.”  On the e-Services for Business Login page, enter your username and password.
  • To apply for an employer payroll tax account number select “New Customer.”  Select the “Register for Employer Payroll Tax Account Number” link and complete the online registration application questions.  To find out what information you will need to have available to complete the online registration application, read "Am I Required to Register as an Employer?"
  • After you submit your registration request, you will receive a confirmation email.  The email will contain a link to e-Services for Business page.  From the e-Services for Business page, select “e-Services Login.”  Enter your username and password.
  • You will have immediate access to your e-Services for Business account.  From your online account, select the “Message” tab to view a secure welcome message that will identify your eight digit employer payroll tax account number and include links to your reporting requirements with the EDD.   Select your account number in the “My Accounts” panel to begin reporting wages and making deposits.

Both the classroom and Web-based seminars are designed to help employers comply with the State of California payroll tax laws.
